The Dew Breaker
Well im still a little confused as to what is going on in this book. I dont understand how the stories really tie together fully. I'm loosing sight of all of the different characters I haven't yet read the last chapter and I know we spoke about it briefly in class but i think I might just have to read the book over again in one sitting before the final!

ReplyDeleteI don’t believe that every tie between the stories needs to be apparent to grasp Danticat’s message. Each story is strong enough to stand on its own. However, as a collective whole, it is a brilliant and masterful novel. As Professor Davis discussed is class, dominating themes of guilt and innocence are present. I also read themes of forgiveness and judgment (which probably go hand in hand with guilt and innocence).
ReplyDeleteFrom Danticat’s novel, I found that regardless of the reason for leaving Haiti, each character carried with him/her something that haunted their current lives. There is great variation in the degree to which whatever they were guilty of, or a victim of, affected them. However, they all felt some degree of brokenness and needed to somehow shed the weight of the past.
